Biorhiza pallida is characterised by 2
generations, an unisexual and an sexual generation.
Wingless females emerging from oak root galls
oviposit at the end of winter into the buds of oaks. This leads
to the development of potato like galls (20-50 mm in diameter)
which become brownish when mature (see image above). From these
galls winged males and winged or wingless female wasps emerge in
June-July. The females oviposit into roots of oaks which lead to
the development of 5-25 mm big root galls.
B. pallida is widely distributed and common
in Europe, North Afrika, and Asia Minor. Their larvae can
develop on various species of oak: Q. canariensis, Q.
faginea, Q. frainetto, Q. petraea, Q. pubescens,
Q. pyrenaica, Q. robur, Q. ilex.
